How did you get into tattooing?

I studied Fine Art at the Vaal University of Technology. I was looking for something more challenging than just pencil and paper, brush and canvas. I did my research about tattoos and realised tattooing is a form of art. I started tattooing six years ago in Durban after on-the-job training for three months. Training is usually six months but my art skills helped me progress quickly.

What was your first tattoo?

It’s a Mauri tattoo on my shoulder as a tribute to my family.

Favourite thing about tattooing?

Every time you do a tattoo it feels brand new because you meet new people and work on different skin types. You always hear different stories. You learn more about people’s backgrounds and why they are getting tattoos.

What inspires your work?

My art background plays a part of my inspiration, because art is my first love. I try to make it more of an art form than just a trace and design on your body.

What’s your favourite music genre?

Deep house. It helps me concentrate on my work – the rhythm and the flow don’t distract me from my tattooing. But at Black and White we play all kinds of genres. We’re open-minded.

What should people consider before getting new ink?

Be sure that it won’t affect your career and make sure it’s really what you want to get. Remember, it will last you a lifetime.

How did you get into tattooing?

I started tattooing after I finished matric. I decided to pursue my passion for art in a realistic way, where I can do what I love and still generate an income. It’s a great way to meet new people and challenge myself on a day-to-day basis.

What was your first tattoo?

A teddy bear on my shoulder.

Favourite thing about tattooing?

The thrill. You have to work on a living, breathing canvas with an opinion. Nothing beats excitement like that.

What inspires your work?

The people I tattoo inspire me. The choices they make could lead you in a different direction of thought. My wife is my inspiration as well.

What’s your favourite music genre?

I love alternative music as in softer and deeper. But really, I love good music.

What should people consider before getting new ink?

Five easy steps: placement, size, colour (or black and grey), your work environment and the dedication to that art piece.
